Mini-RF
Synthetic Aperture Radar Instrument
The APL-integrated synthetic aperture radar instrument called “Mini-RF” will survey the Moon on two upcoming missions: the Indian Space Research Organization’s Chandrayaan-1 and NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), both scheduled for launch in 2008. Each Mini-RF will scan the lunar surface for water-ice. The instrument on Chandrayaan-1 will conduct detailed mapping of the lunar poles, and the enhanced LRO instrument will search for subsurface water-ice deposits and obtain high-resolution images of permanently shadowed lunar regions. The data from both missions will help pave the way for our return to the Moon.
