ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer)
Built by the Applied Physics Laboratory and operating since1997, the Advanced Composition Explorer, or ACE mission, is the only spacecraft measuring space weather in real time. From the L1 libration point between the Sun and Earth, ACE measures a wide range of energy and accelerated particles from the Sun and other galactic sources. When reporting space weather, ACE can provide an advance warning (about one hour) of geomagnetic storms that can overload power grids, disrupt communications on Earth, or present a hazard to astronauts.
